My Lucky Charms

I've been playing poker since the middle of February this year and I can say I am already a fan. Regularly, I play low-stakes with my friends, because we are more after the fun than the money. Funny thing is anyone who wins ends up buying something for everybody like junk foods.

Our poker games usually are just for bragging rights. I myself love the idea of beating them in poker because it will mean I am better than all of them. It is fulfilling for me because I am a female poker player, and I play with my male friends. That is why it is such an achievement for me if I win.

I have also noticed that as our poker days go by, I have developed some serious superstitions of my own. My friends also have their own poker superstitions. It seems that we are a bunch of superstitious poker players.

I feel like my superstitions really help me win poker games. Or, maybe that is just placebo effect kicking in. Whether or not my lucky items or rituals really do not work - I think does not matter anymore. What is important is I have something to believe in, to boost my confidence, which is so vital in playing poker.

What are my poker superstitions?

I have the habit of arranging and rearranging my poker chips during the game. I pile it up neatly and I place the highest denominations on tope of my hole cards. This, I believe brings good luck for my hole cards. When I forget to do this, I have observed that I lose. I do not know if there really is some connection between the two, but better be safe than sorry. I choose to trust my superstitions.

I also do not look at my hole cards until everybody was dealt theirs. This is because I believe that you will preempt the luck if you look into your hole cards immediately after they were dealt to you. I feel like I will be pushing luck away if I look at them.

If the river is being drawn, and I really need it badly to form my hand, I utter the phrase, "Buddha bless you". At first, my poker opponents laughed at me for doing so, but to their surprise, I get what I wanted. Then I did this a couple more times, especially in showdowns, where the hole cards are already revealed. To their surprise, my mantra never failed me. Afterwards, my poker opponents started uttering "Buddha bless you" in showdowns. However, it only works for me.
